The opening of the Babcock Canada Interaction Lab represents a symbolic reawakening of the spirit of applied learning throughout the college, explains Camosun’s Director of Applied Learning Nancy Sly. “When we’re talking about applied learning, I don’t want us to forget that it’s at the core of who we are and what we do and it always has been. Camosun is taking the lead as one of the first colleges in British Columbia to renew its Colleague record system and enhance its internal business processes.
Colleague is the college’s integrated system which supports admissions, registration, student academic records, financial aid, payroll, accounts payable and human resources. The system is provided by Ellucian, a global company, which focuses solely on providing higher education institutions with secure business management software solutions and services.

Camosun alumnus Hebron Watson believes that virtual reality will revolutionise local manufacturing and enhance the educational experience. “At Camosun Innovates, we created a simulated studio space so that when we had manufacturers going through the design and manufacturing process on a product with us, instead of looking at it in 2-D on a computer, they can enter a virtual reality space and understand it in 3-D,” he explains.

Pilots battling forest fires across the province endure unique stresses and challenges, explains Rich Burman, Interaction Lead for the Camosun Innovates team. “They’ll fly right into a smoke column and they say it’s like turning the lights off in a room, pitch black and all you can see are embers,” he says. “Their heart rates go up significantly in the space of a few seconds.”

Camosun College’s new Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy has received unanimous approval by the college’s Board of Governors.
The new policy is now in effect with information on support services and resources for students available online: camosun.ca/sexual-violence. The dedicated website provides resources to assist those who need support and those who may give support to anyone who may disclose a sexual violence or misconduct incident.

Camosun College has increased its regional presence with the opening of the Camosun Coastal Centre. Formerly known as IMTARC (Industry Marine Training and Applied Research Centre), the satellite site is located on Songhees Nation Territory near the Esquimalt Graving Dock. The 4,000 square foot training building sits on leased land and was built in 2013.
