Camosun is an educator, employer, innovator, contributor and key economic driver. After 40 years, Camosun's economic contribution to the local community and the province has grown to over $1.2 billion annually, according to a new economic impact study commissioned by the college earlier this year.

The Camosun Chargers men's golf team came from behind to capture the bronze medal at the 2013 PING CCAA Golf National Championship at the Royal Quebec Golf Club, Quebec City. The Chargers team scored the lowest round of the day finishing with 288 for a three day championship total of 881. The gold medal went to University of the Fraser Valley (863) and sliver to Humber College (875).

The Camosun College Chargers paid tribute to four very special individuals Friday night at the Inaugural Chargers Athletic Scholarship and Hall of Fame Dinner at the Laurel Point Inn. Over the course of the evening, guests raised more than $20,000 through live and silent auctions in support of student-athlete scholarships.

The Honourable Amrik Virk, Minister of Advanced Education, was on campus today to announce close to $800,000 for Camosun for additional student spaces in the college’s popular Health Care Assistant and Mental Health and Addictions programs.

Camosun College research chemist Blair Surridge is developing comprehensive, cost-effective methods to detect pesticide residues and other contaminants on fresh produce. The two-year project is in its early stages, but affordable and accessible screening methods to detect even minute chemical residues on fruits and vegetables may eventually translate into better quality assurance for local farmers, retail outlets and consumers.

Camosun's five-year energy management plan concluded on a high note March 31, greatly exceeding its targets and contributing over $2.7 Million to the fiscal bottom line in avoided costs and new equipment/infrastructure. This success clearly demonstrates how energy conservation can enhance operating budgets while maintaining a vibrant, productive and livable work/study environment for students and staff.

Michelle Bass, program leader, and the IMHA students look at mental health and addiction with a more recovery-focused lens—looking at ways for people struggling with these afflictions to get on with their lives and participate fully in society.

A team of Camosun students recently took first-place in a Capital Regional District climate change learning competition, “Ready, Set, Solve.” The annual contest hosted by the CRD challenges post-secondary students from Camosun, the University of Victoria and Royal Roads to develop creative, innovative approaches to solving real-world problems. This year 18 teams participated; nine included students from Camosun.

Camosun Environmental Technology student Nathan Fisk is the recipient of the 2012 College Co-op Student of the Year award, presented by the Association of Co-op Education-BC/Yukon. The prestigious award recognizes Nathan’s outstanding work as a Garry Oak ecosystem recovery technician at the Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site in Victoria.

More than 30 teachers and parents spent the day at Camosun to learn first-hand what it takes to pursue a career in the trades. The one-day trades conference was held at Interurban campus on Friday, February 15, 2013. It was organized for the five school districts in the South Island Partnership to give teachers and parents a better understanding of the challenges and potential of trades careers.
