Camosun Delivers Award Winning Performance

Posted Fri, 03 May 2013

Attendees of the DECA 52nd Annual International Career Development Conference heard the names of Camosun students many times on April 20th, 2013.  Four school of business students were called to stage, accepting top honors for their efforts in the Accounting Business Simulation and Financial Statement Analysis events.

Kyle Blakeney and Jasmine Giesbrecht captured second place in the Financial Statement Analysis event.  This team event required the preparation of an analytical report which highlighted the financial strengths and weaknesses of CVS Caremark and Walgreens Co.  Role playing as financial consultants, Blakeney and Giesbrecht presented their findings and made an investment recommendation to a panel of expert judges from the industry.

Medaling in the top eight were Jeremy Rilkoff and David Noble in the Accounting Business Simulation event.  This is an individual event which requires the analysis of a real world accounting situation. Participants are required to develop ideas/solutions to the situation in a timed environment without access to reference materials and then present them to a professional judge.  Participants also take a comprehensive exam.

Also attending and competing at the conference were Mathew DeGraaf (Human Resource Management), Anda Shkodra (Accounting Business Simulation) and Bob Tiet (Professional Sales Presentation).

The conference was held in Anaheim California and hosted more than 1200 students representing over 200 postsecondary institutions across North America.    DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in colleges around the globe.  DECA provides its members with opportunities to volunteer at local events, organize fundraising activities, participate in leadership seminars, and compete in international business simulations.
