As part of Camosun’s TRADEmark of Excellence Campaign for the expansion and redevelopment of our trades training complex at Camosun, Seaspan’s Victoria Shipyards has manufactured and donated a 6 tonne ship’s bulkhead training module. This essential addition to Camosun’s new Coastal Skills Initiative is in addition to the $300K donation from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation to support training for women in trades that was announced on June 23, 2016.

Camosun College welcomes the community to join in the excitement as preparations get underway for the 2017 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship, March 8-11. The championship will feature the top eight teams in the country and will be Camosun’s first time hosting an indoor national event.

Camosun College students received 25% of the scholarships being offered by Ike Barber Transfer Scholarships for 2016. The 22 students from Camosun will each receive $5,000. The scholarship recognizes excellence in academic achievement and community service.

Camosun College and BC’s Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation (SDSI) are partnering to offer a new work experience pilot program for graduates of the College’s Office Administration Certificate Program.

The province has announced their funding of $5.2 million this year for trades training programs at Camosun. This investment, through the Industry Training Authority (ITA), will fund 2,047 seats in various trades programs including: electrical, carpentry, professional cook training, welding, automotive technology, sheet metal, plumbing and more.

With top-notch grades coming out of high school in India, Sukhdeep Kaur could have gone anywhere in the world to further her education, but Canada was always her first choice. “With my test scores, everybody was telling me that I should go to Canada,” she says. “Canada is known as a safe country and what I really like about it here is the respect for talent. There is no partiality.“

The Camosun College Chargers men’s golf team emerged as repeat champions this weekend following Sunday’s closing round of the 2016 Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) golf season. Over the four-tournament season, Camosun topped the team competition by an impressive 22 strokes to lay claim to their second consecutive conference title.

Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson visited plumbing and pipe trades students at Camosun College this week to see the benefit of open textbooks in action. The visit also celebrated the first anniversary of common-core-trades open textbooks, which offer resources for skills relevant to many trades.
