In response to current and future industry needs, Camosun is launching a new Sheet Metal and Metal Fabrication Foundation program. The 30-week full-time program will prepare graduates for a choice of careers and apprenticeships, accepting 18 students into the first intake, starting Monday, August 22 at Interurban campus.

Brie Ansell began her career as a finishing carpenter and although she enjoyed the work, after a few years she began to recognize the physical toll the work took on her body. Due to her long time interest in environmental science, Ansell investigated the possibility of returning to school to explore that avenue.

In February 2011, Camosun student, Bryan Kelly, volunteered to be the producer of the DVD: "A Rhythm and Blues Review." The Applied Communication (ACP) project was to create a dynamic marketing tool for the Vic High Rhythm and Blues band. However, it has also captivated the Broadcast Educators Association of Canada (BEAC), with Kelly the winner of a national student award in the Video—Series or Special category.

When apprenticeship welder Mila Puharich talks about her trade, she draws you deep into the physicality of her work, using language that stimulates the senses with vivid descriptions. As she speaks, you can actually hear the snap of the flint and the roar of the cutting torch; feel the heat of the flame and the gut-pounding vibration of metal against anvil; smell the acrid stench of an electric arc to metal. More than anything though, you get the sense that welding is as much a calling for Puharich as it is a career choice.

Camosun College's library renovations won the attention of the BC Libraries Association, and earned the 2010 Merit Prize for Library Buildings at a recent BCLA awards ceremony. "We were hugely impressed by this project," says BCLA awards chair Ken Cooley. "It's amazing how far the Camosun team managed to stretch every available dollar. The end result is a complete transformation that seems incredible, considering the limited budget and tight timelines. That's why this project stood out and made us say, 'WOW!' "

At Camosun College, we're on our way to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 1,000 tonnes a year by 2012, beating the target of 200 tonnes we set for ourselves at the start of our Energy Management project in 2007. We're ahead of schedule by working with BC Hydro and the provincial government to measure and optimize energy usage on campus, as well as figure out where we can use the latest green technologies to reduce our energy consumption and make our community more sustainable.

Students interested in working for the BC government researched employment insights directly from ten "living books" – actual BC government employers from a variety of ministries. The employers allowed Camosun students to borrow them for 20 minute-sessions, where they could have a private conversation about real-life work experience and paths to employment with the BC government.

Camosun's Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology (ACBT) students received a "massive" gift from MB Laboratories earlier this month. The Sidney-based private testing laboratory generously donated a used gas chromatograph mass spectrometer to the program, valued at close to $20,000.
