The first step to prepare yourself for a successful Co-op or Internship experience is to make a plan for your work term.
Plan your work term
If co-operative education is mandatory for your program, you'll normally receive information about co-op options during your first week of class. A program orientation will be held prior to the start of your first academic term.
If co-operative education is optional for your program, a co-op information session will be held during the term prior to the workplace education preparation seminar. At this meeting, we'll cover frequently asked questions about co-operative education and options for your program.
Talk to your Program Chair, Co-op & Internship Coordinator, or login to the Co-op and Career Portal to book a Co-op/Internship Information Appointment with an Employment Facilitator to get more information. Together you determine what timeline is most appropriate for you to take the mandatory Career Development-Workplace Preparation Skills (CDEV-WPS) course before your first work term. For the Hospitality Management Diploma, students are required to take Hospitality Career Skills (HMGT 100); and Hospitality and Tourism Career Development (TMGT 100) is required for the Applied Tourism & Hospitality Management Post-Degree Diploma.
International students
Under Canadian Immigration Law, as an international student, you are eligible to participate in co-operative education and you can legally work in Canada during specified work terms.
The Co-op Checklist for International Students will assist in planning your participation in co-operative education. You should identify yourself to the Co-operative Education and Career Services office immediately in order to begin the process to apply for the appropriate visa.
Request a Co-op Work Permit Letter here.
The full international fee structure will apply to international students registered in Co-op.
Step 2
Your next step to prepare yourself for workplace learning is to complete the mandatory pre-requisite course that will prepare you for the workplace.
