The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program

Award description

Terry Fox Humanitarian Award recipients are selected for their dedication to the humanitarian ideals of Terry Fox, their volunteer experience, their courage in overcoming obstacles, their participation in sport, fitness and community service and their academic standing.

The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program is not a 'disability' award, though many recipients have faced and overcome physical disabilities. Obstacles can refer to any circumstances - physical, psychological, societal or environmental - which require personal fortitude. Obstacles include - but are not limited to - physical or mental handicaps, financial hardship, family breakup, deaths or illnesses, refugee situations and other life-altering situations.

Criteria

Criteria

Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards are open to students of all abilities.

To be considered for the Award, applicants must meet be:

  • In good academic standing.
  • Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
  • Students graduating from secondary (high) school or students completing their first year of CÉGEP or students who have completed secondary (high) school
  • Involved in voluntary humanitarian activities (for which they have not been compensated).
  • Planning to or are already studying towards their first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution, or entering their 2nd year of CÉGEP in the upcoming academic year.

Terry Fox Award Recipients are eligible to receive the Award until they graduate with their first university degree or diploma (for a maximum of four years), provided they maintain satisfactory academic standing and a standard of humanitarian work and personal conduct which, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, justifies the award.

Application process

Selection process

The selection process begins with an initial review of all complete applications received by the deadline. After the initial review, a shortlist is produced. Shortlisted candidates are then invited for a face-to-face interview, usually in their home province, with a Provincial Interview Committee made up of Terry Fox Humanitarian Scholars, Alumni, and other associates of the Program. Interviews are typically held in April, and applicants are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from the interview location.

Results of the interviews are compiled and reviewed by the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program office, which then presents its results to a Selection Committee. After deliberations, the Selection Committee will recommend deserving candidates to the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program’s Board of Directors – professional individuals and TFHAP Alumni from across the country – who will make the final determination regarding awards at the Annual General Meeting, usually held in late May to early June. Traditionally, the Executive Director and Board of Directors contact the new Terry Fox Scholars by telephone thereafter.

Selection Criteria

The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award is open to students of all abilities and all fields of study.

Terry Fox Humanitarian Award recipients are selected for their dedication to the humanitarian ideals of Terry Fox, their courage in overcoming obstacles, and definite marks of distinction and persistence in the pursuit of excellence in academic, athletic, and civic life.

We are looking for humanitarians, those who improve human welfare, make a difference, and have a positive impact on community and others.

While Terry faced many obstacles, and quite clearly a physical one, candidates may face different types of obstacles. A myriad of obstacles exist, and we consider any adversity that calls for a demonstration of courage, compassion, and fortitude. Financial need is not in itself a criteria of our Award. It can, however, be included as an obstacle.
