Award description

Applicants to this Scholarship Program must be either hard of hearing, deafened or oral deaf. Support documentation is required. Eligible applicants may be first-time or returning post-secondary students, registered in a full-time program. The field of study is not a factor in the selection process. Eligibility is based on an overall assessment of the applicant including academic achievement, determination to cope with hearing loss, and community involvement.

  1. pplicants to the CHHA Scholarship Program must be either hard of hearing, deafened or oral deaf with the premise that all applicants use spoken language as their primary means of communication. Those who communicate primarily through sign languages are directed to the Canadian Association for the Deaf.
  2. Eligible applicants may be first-time or returning post-secondary students at a recognized College or University.  Students should be registered in or planning to register for a full-time program as of September 2020.  Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident/landed immigrant, convention refugee or a protected person living in Canada, as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Field of study, year of program of study, and location of residence may be a factor in the selection process for some scholarships.  
  3. Mature students are also eligible applicants.  Mature students are encouraged to submit 2 academic transcripts when available or a minimum of 1 academic transcript and a statement (500 words or less) identifying the reason for the student's hiatus and return to school.
  4. Eligibility for these Scholarships is based on an overall assessment of the applicant. Applications will be judged by a number of criteria including academic achievement, determination to cope with hearing loss, demonstration of advocacy and community involvement.
  5. Successful applicants will be notified as soon as a selection has been made. Funds will be distributed upon receipt of proof of registration.  Please note that scholarships are taxable income.  Previous scholarship winners may not apply for the same scholarship to which they were awarded.
  6. Recipients must agree that names and/or photographs may be used by CHHA or the primary donors for promotion of the CHHA Scholarship Program and to encourage future applicants. Mediums may include the annual CHHA Conference and Annual report, Listen/Écoute, magazines, e-newsletters, local newspapers (in the recipient’s community) and a press release to national media.
