National AccessAbility week celebrates and highlights the important initiatives aimed at creating an Accessible Canada.
AccessAbility Week 2024
National AccessAbility Week, held from May 25 to May 31, 2025, celebrates the contributions and leadership of people with disabilities in Canada. At Camosun College, we recognize the importance of this week as an opportunity to reflect on our ongoing commitment to accessibility across our campuses.
Camosun’s Commitment to Accessibility
Camosun College is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where all students, staff, and visitors can thrive. This year, we will be joining CamFest in September, where we will host a tabling event to connect with the college community, share resources, and gather feedback to further our accessibility goals.
Additionally, Camosun is in the process of drafting its inaugural Accessibility Report. This report will outline our progress, challenges, and future plans to enhance accessibility across our campuses, ensuring transparency and accountability in our efforts.
Recent Accessibility Initiatives
Camosun has completed several key projects to improve accessibility:
- Accessibility Audit of Major Buildings
A comprehensive audit of all major buildings identified necessary accessibility improvements and their estimated implementation costs, providing a clear roadmap for future enhancements. - Assessment at Lansdowne and Interurban Campuses
An evaluation of hardscapes, including stairs, ramps, and walkways, as well as areas requiring renewal or replacement to improve campus mobility. - Wayfinding Standards Development
New wayfinding standards were established for signage, ensuring consistency from campus entry points to room-level markers, enhancing navigation for all campus users. - Website Accessibility Audit and Improvements
An accessibility audit of our website led to various improvements, including enhanced search functionality and alignment with web accessibility standards, ensuring a more inclusive digital experience. - Exam Accommodation Process Improvements
Within the Centre for Accessible Learning, Camosun is expanding the use of Clockwork software streamlining the accommodation process for examinations, ensuring students with disabilities receive the support they need to succeed academically.
The outcomes of these initiatives will inform future plans to implement identified improvements as part of our long-term commitment to accessibility.
