Janelle is a dedicated student working towards her Associate of Science degree. She is also a single parent. Janelle faced numerous challenges, juggling her studies with the responsibilities of raising her young daughter. When an unexpected move added to her financial strain, Janelle's dream of becoming a scientist seemed out of reach.

With the support of the Erasing Barriers to Education Fund, she was able to cover her unexpected expenses and continue her education without interruption. Today, Janelle is excelling in her studies, and inspiring her daughter with her determination to overcome obstacles.

Mark's ambition

Mark's journey began with a dream of becoming a Carpenter. However, when a sudden family emergency left him with unexpected financial responsibilities, Mark's education was at risk. As Skilled Trades students do not typically qualify for bursaries or financial aid, he found himself torn between his aspirations and the pressing needs at home.

The Erasing Barriers to Education Fund provided Mark with the support he needed during his family's difficult time. With the fund's assistance, he was able to balance his studies and support his family simultaneously. Today, Mark has not only completed his Red Seal but has also become a source of support for new apprentices joining the trade.

Ethan's clear vision

Ethan had a simple dream: he wanted to study social work to make a positive difference in his community. He believed that by learning and practicing social work, he could help people in various ways, offering support and solutions to those facing challenges. However, as a full-time student supporting himself, he confronted unexpected financial challenges that threatened to derail his academic journey.

Jessie's educational journey took an unexpected turn when she contracted Covid-19. The virus not only affected her health but also disrupted her studies and financial stability. Isolation and illness became barriers to her education, casting a shadow over her dreams of academic success. As she navigated recovery, Jessie realized she needed support to get back on her feet.

Battling both the aftermath of the virus and the financial challenges it imposed, Jessie reached out for assistance. With the support of the Erasing Barriers to Education Fund, Jessie received the financial assistance she needed which allowed her to focus on her recovery and her studies.

Jessie is now the Secretary-Treasurer of the British Columbia Federation of Students, using her voice to advocate for students provincially and nationwide. Her journey reminds us that challenges can be stepping stones to greatness and, with the right support, dreams can be achieved even in the face of setbacks.

Sarah's journey began in a seemingly idyllic partnership that eventually turned into a nightmare. Behind closed doors, she suffered physical and emotional abuse that left her bruised, broken, and fearing for her and her daughter’s lives.

Sarah saw her education as a path to freedom. She knew obtaining her degree would empower her and her daughter to break free from the cycle of abuse and build a better life for them both. However, financial barriers were in the way as she had to consider the cost of childcare, housing, and tuition.

With immense courage, Sarah took the step of breaking free from her abuser. Fleeing with her daughter in tow, she left behind the pain but also faced the stark reality of starting anew. With no financial safety net, she was determined to secure a brighter future for her child and herself.

In her journey to rebuild, Sarah shared her story and fears of possibly having to leave school with one of her favourite instructors, who then helped connect her to financial aid. Camosun's compassionate Financial Aid team listened to her story, providing not only financial support but also a lifeline to safety and stability. They recognized the urgency of her situation and tailored their assistance to address her specific needs.

With the support of the fund, Sarah's journey became more stable. The financial assistance Sarah received helped her to stay in school and focus on her studies while working towards healing, growth, and empowerment. The fund's support was more than just monetary; it was a reminder that she was not alone on her journey to reclaim her life.
