Donavan completed a Construction Engineering Technology program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1997 and started a Carpentry apprenticeship receiving a red seal in 2000. In 2003 Donavan worked as a foreman for Stuart Olson Construction being involved mainly in commercial and institutional construction. In 2006 Donavan had the opportunity to start teaching Carpentry apprentices at NAIT as well as Lakeland College in Vermillion Alberta. In 2008 Donavan and his family moved to Victoria to work as a Carpentry instructor at Camosun College. Since 2012 he has been involved with the TASK program which delivers trades instruction to many high schools on the south island.
While not at Camosun, Donavan enjoys playing rec hockey, and spending time with his wife and family.
