Students pursuing a career in the trades at Camosun College will benefit from $1 million from Kelowna-based developer Highstreet.
The donation will support educational initiatives at Camosun, focusing on promoting trades education, enhancing diversity, and fostering student success in the skilled trades sector.
“We’re extremely excited about this generous donation and new partnership with Highstreet,” says Lane Trotter, President of Camosun College. “This donation will not only help to remove barriers for individual students but also contribute to the growth of the skilled trades workforce to meet demand in our region.”
The donation includes financial awards to trades students and bursaries for women in trades. Money will also go to key initiatives such as high school trades exploration opportunities, trades sampler summer programs geared to grades seven to nine students and funding for students who have completed their Foundation training through the South Island Partnership.
“This is a great opportunity to give back to an industry that is very important to us and the province,” says Scott Butler, CEO of Highstreet. “The trades are an exciting and rewarding career path and we’re happy to create more opportunities for people to explore and find their place within this industry that continues to grow.”
The contribution from Highstreet will have a significant impact on the future of trades education at Camosun College. It will increase access to trades exploration and dual credit programs while encouraging more students to pursue careers in the skilled trades. It will address the financial barriers for women entering trades, promoting diversity and inclusion in a persistently male-dominated field. As well, it will reward and retain top-performing trades students, ensuring they continue their education and transition successfully into the workforce.
