Chargers mens volleyball are 2023 CCAA National Champions

Chargers men’s volleyball are golden again

The Chargers men’s volleyball team are once again Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) champions, after defeating the host team and three-time Ontario champions Humber Hawks in three straight sets. The Chargers won 25-19, 25-22, and 25-20.

Lucas Maffia (Oak Bay High/Victoria, B.C.) was named Chargers Player of the Game.

“This game and win is extra special for me and our veteran group as this is our last game as a Charger,” said Maffia. “The number one thing for us this season and coming into this game was our strong attack and service lines, which we relied on for this game.”

Dale MacDonnell (Belmont Secondary/Victoria, B.C.) and Maffia were named Second Team All-Stars, Brendan Folkerts (MCBI/Winnipeg, MB) named First Team All-Star, and kill-beast Eduardo Bida (Colégio Gabarito/Uberlândia, Brazil) was named the tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP).

On Wednesday, the Chargers defeated the Providence Pilots in four sets to advance to the semi-final where they got past the Fanshawe Falcons 3-1 on Thursday.

The Chargers are the first CCAA team to win back-to-back national golds for the first time since 2016 and 2017 where the Red Deer Kings managed the massive task. This is the Chargers third national gold.

This was the final game in a Chargers uniform for senior players MacDonnell, Folkerts, and Bida.

The Camosun Chargers Athletics Program currently fields teams in basketball and volleyball. Since joining the Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) and PACWEST conferences in 1994, the Chargers have competed in over 100 national and provincial championships with over 50 medal winning finishes.
