Camosun capstone showcases student innovations

From apps to automated windvanes, graduating Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering students from Camosun College will be presenting their innovative capstone projects on Friday, Aug. 16 to potential employers and campus visitors.

Students explain their projects at a Mechanical Engineering Capstone event

This annual event is a highlight for the college, where graduating students present their learnings through projects that demonstrate creativity, technical expertise, and real-world problem-solving abilities.

“Working on the Capstone project was an intense experience, but seeing it come to life and being able to present it to industry professionals is incredibly rewarding,” says Max Doak, student in the Interactive Media Developer program. “It’s the perfect bridge between academics and the real world.”

Attendees can explore a variety of innovative solutions, such as an automated windvane system designed for Arctic expeditions, a mobile inspection app for property management, and a custom GPS tracker for search and rescue operations.

“We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication our students have shown throughout their projects,” says Saryta Schaerer, program chair of the Computer Science department at Camosun College. “The symposium not only showcases their technical abilities but also their capacity to innovate and solve complex challenges. It’s a testament to the high caliber of education and training they’ve received here at Camosun.”

The Capstone Symposium will take place on Friday, Aug. 16, 2024, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Centre for Trades Education and Innovation (CTEI) on Camosun’s Interurban campus. The event promises a day of discovery and dialogue. Students will present their projects, engage with guest speakers, and demonstrate their problem-solving skills.

The capstone aligned with the college’s 2023-2028 strategic plan to offer more students an applied learning opportunity as part of Strengthening the Camosun Advantage including capstone, service learning, work integrated learning, apprenticeship etc.
