John Boraas, Provost and Vice-President Education, is retiring from the college on Jan. 24. John has been an educational leader and advocate for equity and access throughout his 40-year career in the B.C. post-secondary system.

John Boraas, Provost and VP, Education and Innovation
He started his college career with Northern Lights College, in Dawson Creek, the community where he was born and raised. His deep commitment to the community college model, a system that provides opportunities to all learners, was nurtured by his experiences in the North.
John joined Camosun College in 2000 as Dean, School of Access. In 2012 he was appointed Vice-President, Education. In this role, his accomplishments were many, including:
- Leader and partner in developing the college’s Indigenization initiative and its Truth and Reconciliation response.
- Provided leadership in the development of the new Trades and Technology and Health and Human Services Centres.
- Supported the renovation and expansion of campus libraries, and the establishment of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
- Led initiatives to streamline and enhance education approvals and policy development processes.
- Oversaw the expansion and visibility of Camosun Innovates and the South Island Partnership.
- Initiated the college’s applied learning framework.
- Created the college’s first diversity committee in 2010, laying the groundwork for the college’s office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion established in 2024.
John’s reputation as a passionate educator, committed to community colleges, where adult learners can realize their academic and career potential is recognized widely, at Camosun and beyond.
While his professional accomplishments are many, the Camosun community knows that John’s super-power is his principled approach to leadership, where relationships are valued above everything. For 25 years, he has led by example, supporting college leaders, faculty, and staff in creating positive and supportive student experiences, and nurturing an inclusive and respectful educational community. And he always keeps in mind the teachings of Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers who have supported him throughout his career.
The college community is hosting an open-house to honour John on Jan. 23 from 1pm to 3pm at Interurban, Campus Centre, 302.
