The plan by the federal government to introduce a two-year study permit cap has been making news headlines since the Jan. 22 announcement.
What we know
Current study permit holders are not affected by the IRCC cap, which is expected to result in new study visas being allocated based on population. All new applicants must have a letter of attestation from the province they intend to travel to and the province needs to have a system in place by March 31, 2024. We also know spouses of new international students starting college programs will no longer be eligible for open work permits.
What we don’t know
There are many unanswered questions. We need additional clarification on the study permit cap and the accompanying details. The Province will need to decide on what the allocation for new student visas will be for Camosun College and the process to receive letters of attestation.
Working with the Province
We will continue to work with the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring international students continue to receive a welcoming and enriching experience. On Jan. 29, the ministry introduced new measures to bring in higher standards and greater accountability for education institutions in B.C. We are supportive of further strengthening international education.
Commitment to student success
International students have contributed immensely to life on campus, in the classroom and in communities throughout our region. Benefits are cultural, social and economic. A diverse student body, including international students, has resulted in programs and a support system to meet the varied needs of all students, enhancing the learning environment for everyone.
We have been through a lot together including working together to return to financial stability in 2023/24. As we receive further information on next steps, we will need to plan accordingly.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
