Ella Calder, a proud Camosun College alumna, has made significant strides in the sport management arena.
As Community Program Manager for Triathlon Canada, Ella plays a key role in developing the sport of triathlon nationwide. Managing programs, planning camps, and supporting emerging athletes, Ella's work fuels the growth of triathlon at every level. Her path to this impactful role was paved by her time in Camosun College's Bachelor of Sport Management program.
Growing up in Victoria, Ella sought a degree in sport management without leaving the island.
“I was born and raised in Victoria, so I was keen to stay on the island and pursue a degree,” she recalls.
Her journey began at Camosun College, where she was drawn to the program’s perfect blend of academic theory and practical experience.
During her time at Camosun, Ella gained invaluable experience through hands-on opportunities, such as volunteering at a volleyball championship and completing a co-op placement. These experiences, she says, were instrumental in preparing her for her current role.
"I don't think I fully understood how well Camosun was preparing me until I was in my role," she reflects.
The sport management program provided Ella with a deep understanding of the sport industry, its inner workings and key skills such as networking. Her instructors stressed the importance of connections, a lesson that has benefited Ella's naturally reserved personality.
After graduating, Ella's Camosun education opened doors to opportunities in the triathlon world. She is applying her knowledge and skills to oversee a variety of community programs at Triathlon Canada, including national programs, camps, and development series for U23 athletes. Her proudest accomplishment has been organizing national development camps and supporting athletes on their Olympic and Paralympic pathways.
As Ella continues to rise through the ranks of triathlon administration, she credits Camosun College with laying the foundation for her success. The sport management program, with its blend of academic rigor and practical experience, prepared her to navigate the exhilarating world of sport.
For students considering the field, she advises, "Camosun is your path to success... it really prepares you well for what you'll encounter once you leave school."
With its strong industry ties, emphasis on applied learning, and proud tradition of alumni success, Camosun College remains the ideal launching pad for the next generation of sport leaders. As Ella Calder continues to make waves in the world of triathlon, her journey stands as a testament to the power of a Camosun education in propelling graduates to greatness.
