SPMA 101 Internship

Effective date: January 2015

This 4 month, full-time course gives students an opportunity to apply and extend academic knowledge while in an exercise and wellness setting over one academic term. This internship provides students with work experience which is facilitated and monitored by the college.

SPMA 101P Parallel Internship

Effective date: January 2015

This 8 month part-time work experience course gives students an opportunity to participate in co-operative educational experiences that are extended over two academic terms. Depending on program requirements and availability, students may also take several academic courses at the same time. Learning outcomes are tied to academic and career skill development and student learning is monitored and evaluated by Camosun College. Successful completion counts toward an Internship designation.

Effective date: April 2012

Students will learn about the basic anatomical, physiological, and biomechanical aspects of sport performance.  Students will have a balanced introduction to the principles, concepts and relationships of the major biophysical sub disciplines of kinesiology for movement and sport: anatomy, physiology and biomechanics through classroom, laboratory and field based experiences.

Students will learn and practice the rules, and the skills and abilities involved in playing a variety of individual sports. Students will also learn about the equipment, the required facilities, safety procedures, group management, and the special requirements related to managing individual sport.

SPMA 200 Behaviour in Sport Organizations

Effective date: September 2015

Building on the foundational knowledge from the introduction to sport management and sport marketing courses, students will learn about behaviour in sport organizations. With an emphasis on non-profit sport organizations, students will learn about a variety of topics including change management, leadership, conflict, motivation, staffing (particularly related to volunteers), decisions making and team building, organizational dynamics, politics and power issues specific to sport organizations.

SPMA 230 Sport Program Design

Students will develop a sport program, with emphasis on evaluating existing sport programs locally, provincially, nationally and internationally with specific attention to target populations and appropriateness of program design. Students will focus on program objective, target audience, marketing, and resource management in relation to the integrated communication approach.

The course seeks to develop student understanding of the coaching process by investigating the roles of the coach, characteristics of coach and athlete leadership, the coaching process and the fundamental skills of effective coaching. Lectures, seminars, workshops and practical sessions will address the differences in practice and examine participation and performance coaching. Students will be given an opportunity to gain coaching experience, and further develop an understanding of the sports coaching industry in Canada

This course examines the human and financial resources of sport organizations.
