DHYG 219 Head and Neck Anatomy

Students are introduced to anatomical and physiological features of the head and neck region including oral and periodontal anatomy. The course focus is on the healthy/normal continuum that provides the foundation for clinical dental hygiene practice as well as for further study.

DHYG 220 Dental Anatomy

Crown and root anatomy, morphology and occlusion will be studied in detail. Students will identify features of crown and root morphology that relate to the identification and differentiation of teeth in addition to occlusal relationships and how these may affect the provision of dental hygiene care.

This course explores the fundamental concepts related to periodontal diseases, focusing on the etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical characteristics and therapy for plaque-induced gingival diseases and chronic periodontitis.

DHYG 231 Radiology

Effective date: May 2017

This course examines the basic principles of x-ray generation, radiation biology and the uses of x-radiation in dentistry. Principles of parallelling and bisecting techniques are taught along with radiation safety and protection in order to provide a safe environment and to produce optimum radiographic images for interpretation. Legal and ethical issues, concepts related to application of advanced radiographic and imaging techniques as well as techniques for clients with special needs are discussed. Learners are also introduced to radiographic interpretation.

This course introduces the learner to the profession of dental hygiene. Current concepts of practice are examined, with an emphasis on roles, responsibility, and accountability of the dental hygienist within the profession of dental hygiene, the healthcare system, and professional organizations. Medical, legal, ethical principles, laws and practice standards are explored. Concepts related to health promotion, population health and determinants of health as they apply to role of the dental hygienist are discussed.

This course builds on DHYG 245 and introduces the learner to the skill set of a dental hygienist, including concepts relating to evidence based decision-making, teamwork, communication, and cultural competence. Strategies for systematic enquiry and assessment of professional and scientific literature are examined. Partnerships between population groups and health professionals, as well as the role of dental specialists are explored. The role of dental hygienist as an advocate is also discussed.

This course applies learning from BIOL 260, DHYG 221 and DHYG 222 to further discussion of topics in periodontology and oral pathology. Risk factors, diagnostic indicators, healing after therapy, prognosis, referral, occlusal influences, and an introduction to chemotherapeutics. In the area of oral pathology, this course focuses on recognizing and describing clinical characteristics of common intra-oral mucosal lesions. Etiology, significance, dental hygiene management of oral lesions and the process of differential diagnosis are also discussed.

Building on Oral Sciences 2, students examine various gingival and periodontal diseases. Advanced diagnostic techniques, therapeutic interventions, and the role of surgical therapy are discussed. The oral pathology component continues the study of intra-oral mucosal lesions, including oral cancer. Characteristics of sub mucosal and bony lesions of the orofacial region and common lesions of the face are studied.
