ETP student Kyla Kelly says she has blossomed during her time at Camosun College

Kyla Kelly heard about ETP programs at Camosun College through her high school counsellor who connected Kyla with Laura Friesen, program chair.

“I came to Camosun to explore what I want to do,” says Kyla. “I am not sure what I want to do as I am still exploring but I really love gardening and native species of plants. In particular, the edible plants and how you can make them into tea.”

Kyla has been in the ETP program for a year and feels her confidence has grown as a result.

"Kyla is an amazing role model as an independent self-advocate, but more importantly, she found a type of learning and work she loves!"

“Earth Gardening was an interesting program. I don’t mind other program like cooking or farm to table. Everyone has change to explore and find out what they like or don’t like,” she adds. “My family thinks it is good for me that I have a chance to explore. They see that I am happy too.”

Kyla Kelly is oral speaking, can lip read and is fluent in American Sign Language. A cochlear implant has helped her with learning although she still has a hard time with background noise and so it really helps if the teacher or other students wear a special microphone.

“The big difference between high school and Camosun is that you get to choose what you learn,” adds Kyla, “All of the instructors are great and my teacher’s aides are great too. The instructors make me feel safe.”

Laura Friesen, ETP program chair, first met Kyla through a high school program. Together, they share a passion for gardening and plants.

“Sometimes it takes a little time to transition from high school to college, as it is a big step. Kyla waited a year before coming to college,” says Laura. “Many ETP learners are developing positive autonomy and being encouraged to find their passions. We work to be a safe place for students to explore many different kinds of opportunities in our community, and practice independence. It is important work, and it can be tough! Kyla is an amazing role model as an independent self-advocate, but more importantly, she found a type of learning and work she loves! She has a sense of place when we’re outside, learning about plants and getting our hands dirty. It’s magic, and we are very privileged to do this work and witness connections with purpose like Kyla’s.”

Looking beyond Camosun, Kyla is still exploring her potential options although she would like to do something with plants. She tried a landscaping program through Power to Be and that remains an option.

For any students thinking about the ETP program at Camosun, Kyla has some words of advice, “Go for it! You have nothing to lose!”

About ETP programs

Employment Training and Preparation (ETP) programs are designed for adults who identify as facing barriers to education and employment. These strength-based learning programs equip students with the skills needed for entry-level jobs while exploring various work, educational, and community environments. In small cohorts, students develop essential life, learning, and work skills in retail, kitchen, and garden settings, with opportunities for workplace certifications and practical experience.
