When career plans change, having the confidence to pursue new goals is what matters most. This was all part of the educational journey for Mikayla Schonert.
Camosun College
Mikayla – known as Mik to her friends – enrolled in the Employment Training and Preparation (ETP) at Camosun College with the goal of working in retail by improving her literacy and numeracy skills.
“I heard about the ETP program through a family friend,” says Mik. “Initially, I really wanted to work in retail. After I went for a tour, I was excited to learn that I got into the ETP program.”
Instructor Laura Friesen has kept in touch since Mik’s graduation and clearly recalls when Mik first arrived on campus.
“When I think about Mik arriving in class it was like watching a little butterfly coming out of a cocoon,” says Laura. “Mik shocked us all with how just how far she came out her cocoon. Having a safe place to learn and meet new friends helped. We were just cheering Mik on!”
After successfully completing several ETP programs and achieving employment, Mik wanted to continue learning. She upgraded her English at Camosun to pursue further post-secondary studies.
“Camosun has proven to me that they really do care about my education,” she adds. “After I ended my time in ETP, I decided that after my experience in retail, I really wanted to work in child care.”
Camosun’s Early Learning and Care program was too long and expensive plus Mik’s disabilities – epilepsy and global development delay – meant a shorter 10-week early childhood educator assistant course elsewhere was a better fit.
“When I think about Mik arriving in class it was like watching a little butterfly coming out of a cocoon.”

“I was in childcare for eight months and I enjoyed it. I wanted to go full-time but I knew from my own mind it was not going to be a good fit. There were also red flags when I was told by a manager that they had no time to deal with my disability if something did come up.”
Mik adds: “Since my time at Camosun ended, I have worked to overcome a number of obstacles I never thought would come into my life both with jobs and at school.
Currently, Mik is enjoying life and has three part-time jobs with the goal of eventually going full-time. She has started work as a digital marketing consultant; teaches computer skills through WorkBC; and, does paid modelling work.
“Camosun helped me to get to where I am now. If you want a relaxed environment where someone cares for you and your needs, then I would recommend ETP. I was a bit shy with ETP instructors but I have a very special bond now with Laura. I would say it is totally worth it and you should go for it!”
About ETP programs
Employment Training and Preparation (ETP) programs are designed for adults who identify as facing barriers to education and employment. These strength-based learning programs equip students with the skills needed for entry-level jobs while exploring various work, educational, and community environments. In small cohorts, students develop essential life, learning, and work skills in retail, kitchen, and garden settings, with opportunities for workplace certifications and practical experience.
