Both Chargers volleyball teams won gold at 2023 PACWEST Championships

Chargers volleyball teams ready to serve it up at nationals

Both Camosun Chargers volleyball teams are ready to serve it up at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships which take place March 8-11, 2023.

The men are playing at Humber College in Etobicoke, O.N. and the women are at Vancouver Island University (VIU) in Nanaimo, B.C.

The men are looking to be back-to-back national champions this week after playing a perfect Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) Championship last month, beating island rivals VIU in the championship match, and remaining conference champs.

PACWEST Men’s Volleyball Championship Most Valuable Player, Eduardo Bida (Colegio Gabarito/Brazil) and tournament All-Stars Lucas Maffia (Oak Bay Secondary/Victoria, B.C.) and Brendan Folkerts (MCBI/Winnipeg, M.B.) look to lead the team offensively at the tournament.

The women upended the reigning national champs, VIU Mariners, in a stunner 3-0 PACWEST Championship final, to earn their spot as the number one seed from the western conference. This was the first PACWEST gold for the women’s volleyball team in Camosun history. As hosts, VIU automatically advances to the national championship.

The women are led by PACWEST Women’s Volleyball Championship Most Valuable Player, Riyln Boorman (Hunting Hills High School/Red Deer, A.B.), and Championship All-Stars Erica Bolink (Pacific Christian/Victoria, B.C.) and Hannah May (Belmont Secondary/Victoria, B.C.).

Both tournaments start tomorrow, Wed. Mar. 8, with the men facing Providence Pilots at 9:00am PT and the women take on Holland Hurricanes at 1:00pm PT. All games can be viewed online on the CCAA YouTube channel.

Bronze and gold medal matchups are on Sat. March 11.
