Chargers men’s volleyball are back-to-back PACWEST champions

In a re-match of last year's championship, the Chargers remain Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) champions after sweeping the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners.

The Chargers took the first set 25-18, the second set 25-17, and third 25-22.

Eduardo Bida (Colégio Gabarito/Brazil) was named Player of the Game for the Chargers.  Lucas Mafia (Oak Bay Secondary/Victoria, B.C.) and Brendan Folkerts (MCBI/Winnipeg, M.B.) were named to the Championship All-Star team and Bida was awarded the tournament’s most valuable player.

The Chargers went 19-1 in the regular season and never fell off number one in national rankings after winning last years Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship. During the regular season, the Chargers won all four matches against the Mariners.

This is the eleventh medal for the men’s volleyball team at PACWEST championships. Over the past six seasons, these teams have met five times in the PACWEST gold medal match, with the Chargers winning four of them.

The Chargers swept the Douglas Royals in the semi-final on Friday to advance to the championship match. Camosun played a perfect tournament, not losing a set in both matches.

With their semi-final victories the Chargers and Mariners have qualified for the CCAA national championship in two weeks at Humber College in Toronto.  With the recent success of the PACWEST on the national stage the conference has earned a wildcard spot, which means both these teams advance.  The Chargers are the defending national champs. The tournament runs March 8-11, 2023.

The Chargers women’s volleyball team won gold earlier today; this is the first double-team championship win in the PACWEST since VIU volleyball teams won in 2019.

The Camosun Chargers Athletics Program currently fields teams in basketball and volleyball. Since joining the Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) and PACWEST conferences in 1994, the Chargers have competed in over 100 national and provincial championships with over 50 medal winning finishes.
