Educational Technology Tools

Educational Technology is a complex and ever-changing landscape. There are many choices and new tools are constantly emerging to meet teaching and learning needs. Through eLearning, the college supports a range of educational technologies to develop and enhance online course delivery. Each of these tools has been vetted for appropriateness to our community and compliance with accessibility, intellectual property, and privacy standards. These tools are funded by the college and have established support processes in place.

Technical Tools

D2L (Brightspace)

D2L Brightspace is Camosun’s learning management system. It provides instructors with a suite of tools to support face-to-face enhanced, blended and fully online learning experiences. Instructors can deliver course materials, activities and assess student learning in a protected environment.

Zoom

Zoom is a web-based conferencing system integrated with D2L. Zoom is used to facilitate synchronous learning opportunities – whether it be to conduct virtual office hours, deliver a virtual class or to host guest speakers remotely and facilitate group collaborations. The application allows presenters to use a whiteboard as well as share presentations and facilitate small breakout groups.

Kaltura

Kaltura is a streaming media service. This YouTube like service can be used for importing, creating, streaming and disseminating video to a wide range of devices. Kaltura is fully integrated with D2L and provides a mechanism to insert videos directly into content, discussions, and assignment dropboxes. Students also have their own accounts to upload and share video.

Blackboard Ally

Ally is a new product that focuses on making digital content more accessible. It assesses course materials that reside in the content tool within D2L (HTML, Word, PPT, PDF) against WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards and guides instructors on how to improve the accessibility of the content. It also provides students with alternative formats to view the content, including audio, tagged PDF, HTML, ePub and electronic braille.

ReadSpeaker

ReadSpeaker is fully integrated with the content tool in D2L and provides online text-to-speech solutions for students.

Articulate

Articulate 360 (A360) consists of a suite of design tools that enables instructional designers to transform static course materials into creative, dynamic and responsive content, activities and assessments with minimal technical programming background. The applications developed through A360 can reside within or outside of D2L.

Camtasia

Camtasia is an application that makes it simple to record and create professional-looking videos, including screen capturing. Camtasia has built-in image editing and video trimming capabilities.
