Greetings! My Name is Kirstin McLaughlin and I am the Chair of the Nursing Department at Camosun College. My practice history spans a decade; two provinces; and practice settings including emergency, intensive care, mental health, substance use, and harm reduction. I began teaching in 2015 and am passionate about anti-oppressive pedagogy which recognizes and celebrates the diversity of learners in our classrooms. My areas of scholarship include health equity, anti-oppressive nursing care of 2SLGBTQIA+ clients, and Take Home Naloxone programs. Towards these ends, I was the former Chair of the Diversity Advisory Committee for the City of Kamloops, Kamloops Pride Past President, the BC Winter Games first Inclusion Chair, and a co-author on the American Emergency Nurses Association’s “Care of LGBTQ Patients in the Emergency Care Setting” Toolkit. I created and administered Canada’s first emergency department Take Home Naloxone program, co-authored a decision support tool expanding BC registered nurses’ scope of practice to include naloxone dispensation, and was a recent co-author on the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research’s “Nurse-Assisted Injection: A Path to Equity in Supervised Consumption Services.” I look forward to connecting with you and learning about the unique contributions you bring to the program!
