Anthropology

School of Arts and Science

On Leave. I am cultural anthropologist, specializing in medical anthropology. My interests include the social determinants of health, cultural and structural competency, gender, migration, and power. I graduated from Simon Fraser University with a MA in Anthropology in 2000 and have been teaching at Camosun since 2001. My MA research investigated health care professionals’ understanding of culture and how this informs patient care. My research on traumatic brain injury addresses brain injury survivors’ experiences living with an invisible disability, medical imaging, and social defeat.

I am passionate about anthropology and feel it has something to offer all students, regardless of their academic trajectory. Anthropology is everywhere, and understanding what makes us human is of value to understanding many important issues, including climate change, the refugee crisis, ethnic conflict, and food security.

It is a great honour to teach anthropology to Camosun students. I strive to make anthropology relevant to the lives of our students and to share my love of the discipline.
