Karate is a martial art involving blocks, strikes, evasions, throws, & joint manipulations. Practice is divided into 3 parts: Kihon basic blocks, punches, kicks & stances; Kata - prearranged forms & movements simulating combat; & Kumite - sparring with an opponent. As students progress technically & physically, they are taught more intricate and difficult katas & kumite. Karate-do teaches ethical principles and can have spiritual significance to its adherents.
