Camosun golfers earn PACWEST silver and berth to Nationals
October 7, 2014
It was a fight to the finish this weekend between the PACWEST’s UBCO Heat and Camosun College Chargers, as the two squads battled the links at the Okanagan Golf Club to determine who would join the top ranked Fraser Valley Cascades to represent BC, next week at the CCAA PING National Golf Championships in Quebec City.
In cumulative standings, Camosun entered the fourth and final event of the season in second place, 26 strokes off the leading Fraser Valley Cascades and 12 shots ahead of the VIU Mariners who sat in third. UBCO was five shots back of VIU in fourth with Kwantlen and Douglas trailing in the last two spots.
In the PACWEST season finale, UBCO made the most of their home course advantage, winning the event with a two-day total of 580. Camosun finished second with 595, 8 strokes ahead of the number one UFV Cascades who shot 603. Kwantlen was fourth (606), followed by VIU (612) and Douglas (654).
The tournament’s top 3 individual men were Will Deck – UBCO (68 + 73 = 141), Nick Krystal – UBCO (72 + 70 = 142) and Grant Maskiewich – Camosun (72 + 73 = 145). Camosun’s Brady Stead tied for sixth with 149 (73 + 76) and teammate Brett De Vries shot 76 & 74 to tie for eighth. Jarred Callbeck was 15th with a total of 152 (77 + 75).
While UBCO put forth a great effort to win the event, it was not enough to catch up to the conference leaders, and at the end of the day, Fraser Valley and Camosun prevailed to take gold and silver and the two allotted BC berths to Nationals.
“It was a very close finish,” exclaims Chargers Head Coach John Randle. “It was a very tight battle with UBCO with the final result only decided on the last hole. I am very proud of my guys as they played their best golf of the year when the pressure was the highest.”
This year, the Chargers end the PACWEST season with their third consecutive silver medal and sixth consecutive trip to Nationals since Head Coach John Randle took over the program in 2008.
“Heading to Nationals, I think our team will build on this finish and will play their best golf in Quebec next week,” comments Coach Randle. “We have some amazing individuals … on two separate occasions this past weekend, our players called penalties on themselves, without any hesitation. I am so proud of them for doing the right thing, even when a spot at Nationals was on the line.”
Going into the 2014 CCAA PING National Championships, PACWEST teams UFV and Camosun are ranked #1 and #4 respectively. Rankings of the 14 qualifying men’s teams and seven women’s teams may be found on the CCAA website.
Champlain St. Lawrence plays host to the event October 14-17, at the Club de golf Lorette in Loretteville, QC.
