Feb. 1. 08 Camosun host Kwantlen College Eagles
Women: Camosun 73 Kwantlen 49
The Chargers were at their dominant best against Kwantlen (1-12), getting 18 points from Lapthorne, 13 with seven assists from Drew Crout and 12 more points from Mackay in their lopsided win.
"We were better tonight with our energy and our commitment to defend in the first three quarters.," said Westcott. "We had good balance and we got solid performances from everybody. Hopefully we can build on things leading into playoffs in a couple of weeks."
Men: Camosun 89 Kwantlen 65
Max Bell answered the call with 27 points and Brian Waterman scored another 16 while Jeff Spoor -with 15 points, seven assists, two steals -- continued to gain the respect of every opposition coach.
"Jeff Spoor," said Kwantlen head coach Bernie Love, "is an amazing player and we had problems with him all night."
The Chargers’ three-point shooting was deadly, connecting at a 14-for-23 clip.
"Kwantlen did a nice job of taking away anything easy at the rim, so we were given some looks from the outside and were able to hit," said Chargers' head coach Thatcher. "Bernie Love has done nice job in rebuilding the Kwantlen program and this was not an easy game. Max Bell has really stepped up his game since the break and he had an outstanding shooting game (7-for-11 from behind the arc) against Kwantlen."
Jeff Krawetz grabbed 17 rebounds for the winners.
"We played them really tough and were down three (41-38) at half, but they went on a 17-2 run to start the third quarter and we couldn't get back in the game," said Love who got 17 points from Andy Kaila, 16.
Feb. 2. 08 Camosun host Langara College Falcons
Women: Camosun 71 Langara 56
The league-leading Chargers got the job done defensively on visiting Langara’s two leading scorers, holding Carling Muir to 14 points and Virginia Watson to 10, although Watson did come away with a double-double after grabbing 12 rebounds.
"We did not defend anything, and were annihilated on the glass," said Langara head coach Mike Evans whose squad fell to 7-6. "We have seen the enemy, and it is us."
The Chargers were led by the 20 points of Ashley Mackay and got 14 more from Jill Proudfoot. That pair, along with Teresa Hartrick all grabbed seven rebounds apiece.
"I thought we did a good job keying our defence to trying to stop Langara's two best players, Virginia Watson and Carling Muir," said Camosun head coach Brett Westcott. "We still need to be more consistent at both ends of the court to do as well as we could possibly do. We are still searching for four full quarters of good basketball so we are hopeful we can put a couple of solid performances this coming weekend."
Men: Camosun 87 Langara 66
Jeff Spoor’s 26 points and five assists help power the host Chargers (8-5) to a decisive 21-point win over Vancouver’s Falcons (3-10).
"I was extremely pleased with our defensive effort in the first half," said Camosun head coach Gord Thatcher, of an opening surge that included a 24-6 advantage in the second quarter. "This was an important weekend sweep for us as we are trying to better our playoff seed."
Max Bell and Jeff Krawetz each added 14 for the winners and Brian Waterman another 11. Isaac Neubert has 12 rebounds and six assists.
