After 37 years at the helm of Camosun’s Recreation and Athletics department, Graham Matthews is setting sail to enjoy the sunny shores of retirement!
Camosun Recreation began as a one-man show in 1983 with Graham being the lone proprietor of an office, weight room and mini gym in the basement of the Young Building at Lansdowne. In the early years, Graham helped organize the Camosun contingent for Operation Trackshoes, was in charge of Camosun Graduation Ceremonies, Welcome Week, Blood Donor Drives and also handled off-shoots, like Locker Rentals and Lost and Found. Graham also ran a very vibrant intramurals program at the Carey Road Campus, where staff and students could be found playing basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, badminton, softball and the infamous Annual Mud Bowl tournament.
Today, the department has grown in leaps and bounds with fully staffed fitness centres at each of the Lansdowne and Interurban campuses and the Chargers Athletics program, which has facilitated the success of hundreds of award-winning student-athletes since it's inception in 1994, and has put Camosun on the map as a gold-standard provincial and national championship host. Graham has been instrumental in the growth of the PACWEST, serving as the VP Admin for almost a decade, and contributing to the development of many policies and regulations that have advanced the competitive standards of collegiate sport. While many hands have contributed to the department's development, the one face that has remained constant throughout it all, is Graham's.
We recognize and appreciate Graham's work over the past three decades and will miss his calm demeanor, and kind, approachable manner.
While the COVID-19 pandemic prevents us from celebrating in person, please feel free to contact Graham personally via email at firstname.lastname@example.org to wish him well before he retires on May 29.
