Camosun College welcomes Chargers Men’s Basketball twins, Austin and Calvin Somers, in upcoming Instagram Takeover
Release Date: January 14, 2020
Meet Chargers Men’s Basketball student-athletes Austin and Calvin Somers, the hosts of Camosun College’s upcoming Instagram Takeover!
Born less than 20 minutes apart, fraternal twins Austin and Calvin Somers are used to doing just about everything together. One of their biggest passions growing up has been playing basketball, a sport that the two have played since Grade 2, with the support and encouragement of dad and coach, Ed Somers, who led Lambrick Park to six provincial boys’ basketball championship titles during his coaching tenure at the school.
The twins’ dream of winning a high school championship, together with their father coaching, was thwarted when Calvin tore his ACL in the first game of the boys’ Grade 12 season, leaving Austin to play the final year of high school alone.
Despite a disappointing end to their high school careers, the pair caught the attention of Camosun Men’s Basketball Head Coach Scot Cuachon who saw a great potential in both players, who he considered were “overlooked by other schools due to their size.”
The pair joined the Chargers in Fall 2017, but were sidelined with injuries which kept Calvin on the bench for the first year and has held Austin back until this season.
With their sights set on a successful season, and a work ethic second to none, the twins are back in action and playing a strong role in the Chargers Men’s Basketball Team’s push to the PACWEST Playoffs.
The Chargers Basketball teams travel to Vancouver this weekend to take on the Langara Falcons.
Follow Austin and Calvin on @Camosun Jan. 16-17 as they take us through the paces of what it’s like being Charger and how it feels to be part of a dynamic duo!
