Camosun Chargers Volleyball teams are headed for the 2020 PACWEST Provincial Championships
Release Date: February 18, 2020
The Camosun Chargers Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Teams are headed for the 2020 PACWEST Provincial Championships, hosted by Douglas College in New Westminster. The action starts this Thursday with the gold medal matches set for Saturday evening (Women 5:30pm, Men 8pm).
Having finished the regular season as the No. 2 seeds with a record of 15-9, the Chargers Women have a first round playoff bye and are preparing for their semi-final match (Friday at 12:30pm) against the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal match between the hosting Douglas College Royals (seeded third) and the Capilano University Blues (No. 6).
“The result of Friday's match will mostly be dependent on our team showing up to play their best volleyball,” says Chargers Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Brent Hall. “I believe if we do that, we will win. So 90% of our prep will be priming the athletes to have their best match of the season. Fortunately for us, our two possible opponents played each other in the last round of the regular season, so we have recent information on them to use in our planning. Both teams are capable of playing great volleyball but I believe we will be ready regardless of who we wind up playing.”
The Chargers Men ended their regular season 13-11, placing fourth in the conference standings. Led by Head Coach Charles Parkinson, the team is looking to win their fifth PACWEST title in six years and will begin their hunt for gold on Thursday at 8pm, with a quarterfinal match up against the sixth-seeded College of the Rockies Avalanche.
“The College of the Rockies are much taller and their coach Cisco Ferraro has done a great job of developing their skills,” states Coach Parkinson. “As a result, they are a dangerous team and a team that is playing with a lot of confidence going into the Provincials. One of the things working in our favour is that they have not played our full team yet this season because for some unknown reason we had to play them four times within three weeks and during that period we had four of our starting athletes who were either injured or ill and couldn’t play. We’ve come a long way in the last few weeks and are really starting to gel as a group. The Championships are all about peaking at the right moment and I’m confident we are very close to playing to our full potential, which is timely with the big event and the Avalanche just around the corner.”
Winners of the Men’s Gold and Women’s Gold and Silver medals at this week’s event will punch their ticket to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships.
On the women's side, the PACWEST receives a wildcard berth to the CCAA Nationals which will be hosted by Cégep Garneau in Quebec, beginning Thursday, March 11. The VIU Mariners are two-time defending champions and have won three of the last four seasons.
On the men's side, qualifying teams will travel to St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The Fanshawe Falcons are the defending champions and the VIU Mariners won bronze last year. Camosun is the most recent PACWEST team to have captured the title, winning the crown in 2015.
The PACWEST Provincial Volleyball Championships run from Thursday, Feb. 20 – Saturday, Feb. 22, with matches beginning at 12:30pm each day.
