Chargers earn back-to-back wins and Top 10 CCAA national ranking with help from veteran players Tessa Lannon-Paakspuu and Kathryn Candell

Media Release
Release date: January 8, 2019

Led by veteran players Tessa Lannon-Paakspuu and Kathryn Candell, the Camosun Chargers Women’s Basketball team exploded into the New Year this past weekend with back-to-back wins over the Langara College Falcons in Vancouver. The Chargers fired up their fourth consecutive victory and sit third in the PACWEST conference standings with a record of 5-3. Over the past four weeks of competition, Camosun has risen to a #10 national ranking in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.

In their first match-up against the Falcons on the January 4-5 weekend, Camosun found themselves down 41-26 at the half before making an impressive third quarter comeback where they rallied to tie the game at 54 before charging ahead to a 67-60 victory (BOX SCORES).

“I think the girls stepped up their defensive intensity, which allowed us to get some stops, and also fueled our running game,” states Chargers Head Coach Cait Haggarty. “We got a few quicker scores and began closing the gap.”

Fourth-year guard, Tessa Lannon-Paakspuu (BSFL Exercise & Wellness), had a monster game in Friday’s win, posting a double-double of 32 points and 11 rebounds in Camosun’s first victory of the 2019 winter semester. Third-year forward Mia Roberts (AD Arts) chipped in with 11 points.
“Tessa played very well for us on Friday,” comments Coach Haggarty. “She brought intensity from the start, both offensively and defensively, and was a huge factor in the second half turn around for us. She definitely left everything on the court!”

In Saturday’s rematch, Camosun led 49-31 at the half, but the Falcons came back in the third to whittle the Chargers’ 18-point lead down to four. Camosun made a strong return in the final frame to win by 12, with a final score of 68-56 (BOX SCORES).

Four Chargers made double-digit contributions to Camosun’s win on Saturday. Fifth-year guard, Kathryn Candell (Nursing) led with 24 points while fellow fifth-year guard Ashley McGinnis (Community, Family and Child Studies) made 19 and newcomer from Claremont Secondary, Chloe Scaber (Arts and Science), finished with 15. Maddison Manns (Criminal Justice), also from Claremont and in her rookie season, made her presence known on the boards with 16 rebounds.

“Saturday was a battle from start to finish but we had several people step up and contribute in big ways,” asserts Coach Haggarty. “Ashley played very well and led us for the full 40 minutes. Kat is a natural scorer who hits big shots right when we need them. Chloe is dynamic and brings a lot of energy to the court, it was great to see her add 15 points for the night. Maddie and Jasmine (de Vries) both battled hard for us inside and Maddie was relentless on the rebounds, finishing with 16 for the game.”

At the end of Week 4, three Chargers are featured on the PACWEST Women’s Basketball League Leaders list:

Kathryn Candell #3 in Points (14.60/G); #4 in Assists (2.80/G)
Tessa Lannon-Paakspuu T#9 in Assists (2.38/G)
Maddison Manns #2 in Rebounds (9.50/G)
