Camosun golfers finish Top 3 in PACWEST 2018 season opener

Media Release
Release date: September 11, 2018

The Camosun Chargers men's golf team made a solid start to the 2018 PACWEST season with a Top 3 finish at the Langara Invitational held at the Quilchena Golf and Country Club in Richmond, September 8-9.

Capturing the win in the men's team event were the defending PACWEST champion University of the Fraser Valley Cascades who weathered through wet conditions to a winning two-day total of 583. The UBC-Okanagan Heat placed second with 592 while Camosun battled to third, ending in a tie with the hosting Langara Falcons at 604. Find complete results here.

"The team was excited to get going, but this tournament was really about getting back into tournament mode and for me to see how they played under those conditions," states Chargers Head Coach Doug Hastie. "It was nice to see them play better the second day even with the rain and wind. We are just looking to get better and better and peak for the championships in October."

Individual scores for Camosun are as follows:

Place Name Day 1 + Day 2 Total
T8 Mike Flegel (Yr 5, AD Arts, Moose Jaw) 76 + 72 148
10 Scott Merriam (Yr 5, BBA, Cranbrook) 77 + 72 149
T16 Alex Cordero (Yr 2, Sport Management, Victoria) 77 + 76 153
18 Tyler Robertson (Yr 4, BBA, Prince George) 74 + 80 154

Second-year returnee Cole Yungen (Yr 2, BBA, Powell River) shot 159 (79+80) to finish T21. Newcomers Trevor Green (Yr 2, Computer Engineering, Thunder Bay, ON), Jake Pilon (Yr 1, BBA, Kelowna) and Karsten Waters (Yr 2, BBA, Victoria) anticipate a spot on travel roster in the upcoming weeks of PACWEST tournament action.

"Something new and exciting for this season is that the PACWEST is holding a championship event versus an accumulative scoring system," says Coach Hastie. "The idea is to get everybody into at least one event. You don't have to play your top five at each event, so it'll be a good feeling out process these first three tournaments and everyone will get a chance to represent."

Fifth-year Chargers veteran and 2017-18 PACWEST Academic Excellence award recipient Mike Flegel is also a fan of the new format.

"I'm really excited about playing my final year here," comments Flegel who earned the Men's Golf Team MVP award last season. "We have a really good group of guys with a nice core from last year, along with a new format that features three league tournaments and a three-round championship event. The new format will keep all the teams in the race throughout the season and will allow each team to play a different set of players to get a feel of who they want in the championship event. It's great that everybody will get a chance to play and have the experience of playing in tournament conditions. Overall, I think it will lead to a more exciting finish!"

Up next, the Chargers head to the Okanagan Golf and Country Club for the UBC-Okanagan Invitational, September 15-16.
