Chargers Sydney Svicenec and Lauren Montgomery-Stinson help Camosun collect a show-stopping set from the Nation’s No. 1

Media Release
Release date: November 28, 2018

Going up against the nation’s No. 1 team and defending CCAA National Women’s Volleyball Champion VIU Mariners was no easy task for the Chargers this past weekend but the squad managed to take an exciting 25-23 see-saw set off their Island rivals in Friday’s home game match – a notable accomplishment for a team that is undeniably on the rise.

“Friday night we executed our game plan fairly well, but Saturday less so,” comments Coach Hall on his team’s performance. “The matches this weekend tested our depth, with a number of unfortunate injuries occurring in the weeks leading up to the matches. Several athletes had great individual performances, but in order to beat VIU we needed to have everyone firing on all cylinders.”

The Chargers were led by third-year outside hitter Sydney Svicenec from Spruce Grove, AB (BBA) who had a weekend total of 22 points. Also making a strong mark against the Mariners was second-year outside hitter and Victoria native Lauren Montgomery-Stinson from Claremont Secondary (UT) who posted 18 points over the two matches.

“Sydney and Lauren performed especially well on Friday night,” says Coach Hall. “They were nearly unstoppable on the wings, each hitting over 0.400.”

Svicenec is one of the PACWEST’s Top 15 in a number of categories and continues a steady climb in Kills, reaching #8 with 2.27 per set. She is also #6 in Aces (0.48/S) and #9 Total Offensive Stats (2.88/S). Teammate and fellow weekend leader Lauren Montgomery-Stinson is #15 in Blocks (0.29/S); #12 in Kills (2.03/S) and #15 Total Offensive Stats (2.56/S). Veteran libero Mychaela Roelants has undoubtedly made a strong statement throughout the first half, maintaining her No. 1 status in Digs (3.62/S) for the sixth consecutive week.

Other Chargers ending the first half of the season on the PACWEST Women’s Volleyball League Leaders list are:

Hannah May

#14 in Blocks (0.30/S); #14 Kills (1.79/S); #13 Aces (0.42/S); #13 TOS (2.52/S)

Rayelle Zacharuk #7 Kills (2.34/S); #4 Aces (0.57/S); #7 TOS (3.00/S)
Mika Yamada

#15 in Kills (1.77/S)

Laura Greene #11 in Aces (0.43/S)

With seven wins and five losses under their belt, the Chargers end the first half of the season with a fourth-place conference standing and will now break for exams and the holidays before action resumes in the New Year.

Reflecting on the first half of the season, Coach Hall points to the progress the team has made since league play began seven weeks ago.

“While I think we can improve on it next semester, a 7-5 record in the toughest division in Canada is an achievement the athletes can be proud of,” he affirms. “One of the things I've enjoyed is watching our starting line evolve. We have a gym full of hard-working athletes who make it their mission to define what it means to be a Charger every day in training. We've made a lot of progress and I'm looking forward to continuing on that path through December's training.”

Camosun volleyball returns to the court the first week of January with a road trip to New Westminster where they will face off against the Douglas College Royals.

Our priority right now is to get everyone healthy and to make sure the athletes have time to focus on their studies leading up to final exams,” states Coach Hall. “I expect to make continual progress through the second half of the season. Our level of play has been consistently great in some areas, and inconsistent in others. Filling the gaps and smoothing the edges will take place over time; we are aiming to play our best volleyball at Provincials in February!”
