Chargers men’s volleyball head coach Charles Parkinson faces former Camosun assistant coach-player in PACWEST showdown
Release date: November 7, 2018
Following last week’s bye, the Chargers Men’s Volleyball team is raring to go as Camosun plays host to the Capilano University Blues this weekend. The Blues are led by first-year Head Coach and former Chargers player and Assistant Coach, Dave Dooley, who played two years as a libero for Camosun before assisting Head Coach Charles Parkinson on the bench from 2007-2015.
“This should be a really good match up and I am looking forward both to seeing Dave and to coaching against him,” comments Coach Parkinson who mentored Dooley for close to a decade. “After spending so much time together over many years, there's not much we don't know about each other's styles.”
The match-up promises to be a thriller as the #3 Blues (5-1) and #4 Chargers (4-2) put their strengths to the test.
“Capilano is loaded with talent as VIU found out last week,” states Coach Parkinson. “Their setter Simon Friesen is one of the best in the league and distributes the ball with precision and deception. Two of his targets include Zarley Zalusky in the middle, a PACWEST league All-Star from last season -- and veteran outside hitter, Markiel Simpson, who is new to the Blues this season. He has great hops and hang time and his experience allows him to assess situations quickly and make the right decisions on offense and defense.”
Coach Parkinson adds, "We have to capitalize on our size advantage and that means controlling their outside attackers with our block. If we can limit their productivity, we may be able to force them into over-hitting errors as they try to put it past our wall. We also have to remember to hit high and deep as Capilano loves to dig the hard driven sharp balls, especially cross court."
As well as entertaining fans with some great volleyball, the Chargers anticipate a huge crowd over the weekend to watch the Parkinson-Dooley duel unfold.
“There is a large group of alumni reuniting this weekend to watch Dave battle his former mentor of 10 years in their first head to head battle,” says Chargers Men’s Volleyball Alum Martin Adey. “We’re coming from all over Canada for a stellar weekend!”
The action starts Friday, November 9 at 8pm at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence at Camosun’s Interurban Campus (4371 Interurban Rd) with the final battle of the weekend ensuing on Saturday at 3pm.
“The team that plays with inspiration and makes the fewest errors in the crucial moments will be the one that wins,” states Coach Parkinson. “We have had a great week of training and our veteran players like Eduardo, Doug and Vitor have really stepped up their level of play. Home court advantage should also favor the Chargers, but we really have to take control of our own destiny this weekend if we want to be successful.”
