Camosun Chargers senior girls’ high school tournament begins today
Release date: October 6, 2017
Thirty teams are set to gather this weekend at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE) and St. Margaret’s School to compete in the 2017 Camosun College Chargers Senior Girls’ High School Volleyball Tournament with action beginning today at 1:00pm.
“This tournament continues to hold its place as one of the premiere events on the senior girls' volleyball high school schedule,” states Tournament Director and Chargers Women’s Volleyball Assistant Coach Chris Dahl. “Belmont comes into the event as the number one seed and is in a similar position to last year at this stage of the season. The squad has two consecutive tournament crowns already in 2017 and are the defending BC School Sports AAAA Champions. We anticipate that the power pool format at the event and the strength of the field should test them from the very first serve.”
“Local schools make up the majority of the tournament and it's great to see the sport continue to thrive in Victoria,” added Coach Dahl. “Our tournament registration might even suggest that the game is growing at the school level in the city with the return of a program at Esquimalt over the past couple of years and the growth taking place in athletics at Vic High. Oak Bay has finished in the medals at recent tournaments and the North Island continues to rank among the best in the province.”
The tournament will also feature many of the top young athletes in the province. Locals Savannah Purdy and Erin Mutch spent the summer preparing and competing at the Canada Games in Winnipeg and there are numerous Team BC athletes spread across the teams.
Most of the current Chargers have participated in this event. First year Charger Kyra Schroeder was a Tournament All-Star in 2016 leading her Mount Doug team to a second place finish.
“Hosting the tournament means a lot to the program,” said Chargers Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Brent Hall. “For the Chargers, it's an opportunity to engage with the volleyball community and create a memorable experience for a few hundred young volleyball athletes. We appreciate the continued support from the community making this event a perennial success.”
