Camosun hoopsters pick up trio of awards en route to 2017 PACWEST playoffs

Camosun proudly congratulates two student-athletes from the Chargers women’s basketball program who were named today as recipients of the 2017 PACWEST conference awards. The 2017 PACWEST Provincial Basketball Championships begin tomorrow, running March 2-4 at Quest University in Squamish.

Collecting her second PACWEST 1st Team All-Star award is Chargers co-captain and third-year guard, Kathryn Candell. Newcomer Mia Roberts picked up the PACWEST Rookie of the Year award and All-Rookie Team honors.

Candell and Roberts will lead the charge for Camosun’s women’s team who face championship hosts, the #5 Quest Kermodes in tomorrow’s 6pm quarterfinal. See the PACWEST Playoff Preview for information on the qualifying teams.

The Chargers women have been on the upswing this month, having won four of six games, one of which included a thrilling 95-78 victory over the top-seeded Capilano Blues.  

“From the beginning of the year, despite illness, injury and a short bench, with only one third year player we developed a plan to bring our first and second year players along,” comments Chargers Women’s Basketball Head Coach Carl Macdonald. “Tessa Lannon-Paakspuu, Carly Hopp, and Isla Swanwick our second years are all playing excellent basketball right now. Ali Wergeland, Courtney Anderson, Madison Bullen and Denae Edgar are also providing valuable contributions.”

On the men’s side of the draw, the 2016 PACWEST silver medalist Chargers will open the tournament at 3pm in a quarterfinal battle against the third-seeded Capilano Blues. Check here for the Men’s Championship Preview.

“CAP is going to be a tough first round,” states Chargers Men’s Basketball Head Coach Scot Cuachon. “They've had a good season and have earned their #3 seeding. They've got a good group of competitive athletes who have played well all year. We're working very hard to get our preparations ready for them and look forward to the challenge. Our goal, as always, is to compete at our highest level.”

The PACWEST Provincial Basketball Championships kick off tomorrow, Thursday, March 2. Quarter-final action is scheduled as follows:

Thursday, March 2
1pm Women #3 VIU vs #6 Langara
3pm Men #3 Capilano vs #6 Camosun
6pm Women #4 Camosun vs #5 Quest
8pm Men #4 Douglas vs #5 Quest

Seeds #1 and #2 for men and women have received a first-round bye and begin competition on Friday, March 3.
