Men’s Basketball: Blues punch their ticket to semis

The Capilano Blues punched their ticket to the semi-final with an impressive 76-69 victory over the Camosun Chargers.

Hassan Phills paced the Blues with a team high 23 points and was named the Player of the Game on 7-13 shooting.  More impressively was his defence keeping the Chargers from breakaways.

First team All-Star Greet Gill scored 15 and Rookie of the Year Wayne Untalan dropped in 12 and collected six assists.

As a team the Blues shot 36% from both the field and three-point line.  Their defence created 24
turnovers.

In the loss, Evan Woodson (Business Admin) in his final PACWEST game carried his club netting a game high 27 points.  Rulon Schmidt (Post Degree Accounting), also playing in his final game scored 11 points and collected 15 boards.

As a team they shot 35% from the field and 31% from the three-point line.

The Blues will now face the #2 seeded Langara Falcons in Friday’s semi-final at 3pm.

Women’s Basketball: Chargers hold off Kermodes’ late run

Just when the Camosun Chargers thought a 34 point lead was safe, the Quest Kermodes had other ideas and made the quarterfinal a memorable one.

However the lead was just too much and the Chargers punched their ticket to the semis with an 88-77 victory.

The Chargers admittedly took their foot off the gas and allowed the Kermodes back in the game, but were lucky enough to hold on behind 27 points from player of the game and PACWEST 1st Team All-Star, Kathryn Candell (Nursing). The only thing that saved the Chargers was the free throw shooting of Tessa Lannon-Paakspuu (BSFL) who finished 13-14 from the line, nine of which in the fourth quarter while the Kermodes were making their run.

The Kermodes scored 31 points in the fourth quarter led by Jordin Wilkinson and her 25 points.

The Chargers now face the #1 Capilano Blues in Friday’s semi-final at 6pm.
