Westshore welcomes Camosun and VIU women’s volleyball squads
Release date: September 28, 2016
Camosun College Chargers vs. Vancouver Island University Mariners
Thursday, September 29 at 6:00pm
Belmont Secondary School (3041 Langford Lake Rd)
The Camosun Chargers women's volleyball team will kick off the 2016-17 season with an exhibition match this Thursday evening at Belmont Secondary School in Langford. This is the first match in a two part series versus the VIU Mariners. Camosun and VIU will wrap up the pre-season series at Duncan Christian School on Tuesday, October 4.
Over the past two seasons the Chargers and Mariners have been at the top of the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rankings and National Championships. Camosun finished third in the nation in 2015 and VIU enters the season as the defending CCAA National Champions from the 2016 campaign. Both programs consistently position themselves among the top of the CCAA national rankings during the PACWEST season of play.
"Our natural rivals to the north are able to provide quality competition and a test of our abilities on any given day in any environment,” states Chargers Head Coach Chris Dahl. “Over the past two seasons we've met in loud home gyms during league play, at the PACWEST Championship finals in 2015, and also at our CCAA National Championships. The Mariners are always a great test and we're fortunate to have the opportunity to prepare for the season against our Island rival. It's only a rivalry if the competition is great, and the two programs are clearly there."
Although the Chargers hold a slight edge over the Mariners in head to head competition over the past two years posting a six win to four loss record in official match play, the matches are close and entertaining. Thursday's match is also the first exhibition between the programs in Victoria since the start of the 2010 season. In recent years the Chargers have traveled to Duncan, Campbell River, Courtenay, Comox, and Parksville to play matches against fellow PACWEST members.
"In the past we've tried to schedule these exhibition matches in communities on Vancouver Island that don't have regular access to post-secondary volleyball,” comments Coach Dahl. “However, there's no denying that Victoria is special. There's a vibrant volleyball community here and we're thrilled to have the opportunity to visit Belmont Secondary. The school and athletics venue are outstanding and the athletics scene is thriving in the Westshore communities."
The action begins at 4:00pm as the Belmont senior girls’ volleyball team hosts Brentwood College in exhibition play. The two high school programs are also at the top of their respective leagues. Belmont is coming off of a tournament win at the prestigious UBC event and Brentwood is a top program in the AA high school scene. Immediately following at 6:00pm, the Chargers will face off against the Mariners.
