Release date: September 19, 2016

The Camosun College Chargers men's golf team returned to their winning ways this weekend with a first place finish at the University of British Columbia Okanagan Invitational at the Okanagan Golf and Country Club in Kelowna, September 17-18. The victory puts Camosun in the No. 1 spot in the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) standings.

The Chargers shot a two-day team total of 574 to finish a solid 10 strokes ahead of second-place finishers, the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. The four remaining teams in the field were 20+ strokes off Camosun’s lead with scores of 594 – Langara, 596 – UBC-O, 597 – Vancouver Island University and 611 – Douglas.

Fifth-year student-athlete Mac Keats from Cochrane, Alberta led the charge for Camosun earning the men's individual low and his first PACWEST Athlete of the Week Award with his two-day score of 138 (68 + 70).

“I still have things to work on,” states Keats who totalled 13 birdies over the two day tournament. “But overall, I was pleased with my performance this weekend.”

Veteran Charger Matt Matheson (West Vancouver) finished third with 141 (72 + 69). Cranbrook native Scott Merriam was T11 (71 + 76 = 147) and Mike Flegel (Moose Jaw, SK) was T15 with 148 (73 + 75).

In cumulative standings, Matt Matheson leads the PACWEST with a two-tournament total of 281. Teammate Mac Keats is third with 285.

“The team took a nice step forward this week thanks to some solid play from Mac Keats and Matt Matheson,” says Chargers Head Coach John Randle. “I know when our other guys round into form we will be a very good team.”

The defending national champion Chargers continue their quest for gold this weekend as Douglas College hosts the PACWEST’s third of four conference tournaments at the Westwood Plateau Golf and Country club in Coquitlam, September 24-25.

“I'm happy with the direction we are headed,” comments Coach Randle. “We are all looking forward to traveling to Douglas College's event this coming weekend and trying to extend our lead.”
