Camosun charged for men’s basketball nationals

Media Release
Release date: March 15, 2016

The Camosun College Chargers are headed for sub-zero temperatures today as the team travels to the Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) National Men’s Basketball Championship (March 16-19) hosted by Keyano College in Fort McMurray, AB.

Seeded sixth going into the PACWEST Provincial Championships, the Chargers pulled off two major upsets in the quarters and semis to advance to the gold medal game where they finished with silver and a wildcard to nationals. It is an exciting time for Camosun and their die-hard hoop fans who have waited a decade to see such success, and while the Chargers’ recent run may partially be attributed to luck, this may not be the Cinderella story some consider it to be.

“I certainly understand why it might be billed or thought of as a Cinderella story, but for us it couldn't be further from how we see it,” says Chargers Head Coach Scot Cuachon. “Our motto right from the start of training camp was business as usual. We needed to win a certain number of games to qualify for provincials but the overarching theme that this entire group bought into from Day 1 has been that wins and losses are a dime-a-dozen and that our focus would be on the business of getting better every day. We were most concerned about tracking and following our process step-by-step and doing this each successive day in every practice, drill and meeting. We're very happy that it all came together at the right time!”

Seeded #7 in the championship, the Chargers will need to be in peak performance as they meet the defending National Champion Humber Hawks who are seeded #2 this year. The quarterfinal game is scheduled for Thursday, March 17 at 2pm (MST) or 1pm (Pacific).

“This will be a case of two clashing styles going head to head,” comments Coach Cuachon. “Humber is a fast-paced team and they have the skill to play with that open flow mentality. We are the complete opposite of that style and are more methodical in what we do. It will be a fun game to be a part of.”

If Camosun wins their quarterfinal, the team will advance to Friday’s semi-final at 6pm (MST)/5pm (Pacific). A loss would have them play at noon MST/11 am Pacific. Either way, the Chargers are excited to put their skills to the test on the national stage.

“Opportunities like this are never guaranteed and they don't come as much as you would like them to,” states Coach Cuachon. “We're looking forward most to making the most of this opportunity. We want to win, of course, but more to it is to put our best effort and execution together while competing at the highest collegiate level against the best teams in the country.”
