Camosun’s best finish in a decade plants a fresh start for Chargers men’s basketball program

Media Release
Release date: March 23, 2016

Not since 2005-06 has the Camosun College Chargers men’s basketball team completed a season with a Top 10 national ranking. This year, the Chargers made a spectacular showing at the PACWEST Provincial Championships to earn silver and a trip to the CCAA Nationals where the team finished 2015-16 ranked eighth in Canada.

Fresh off the battle field, the Chargers are pumped to carry their fiery attitude into the upcoming season.

The experience at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship was an eye-opener for the Chargers who faced a new level of competition against the nation’s best. Despite the squad’s grit and determination, Camosun came away from the tournament winless over three games.

“I felt we competed well in spurts but generally, the level of competition and talent was an adjustment for us,” said Chargers Head Coach Scot Cuachon. “However, we now know that we are good enough to be there … we just have to make improvements to make sure we succeed next time. Nationals was a great learning experience for us. We're going to continue developing our core along with adding strategic pieces. Understanding the speed and physicality of which the game is played at the highest level will also help us raise our standards.”

Three Chargers were awarded Player of the Game for their leading performances at the championship; those included fourth-year forward Rulon Schmidt (Cowichan Secondary), second-year guard Eric Weatherby (Gulf Islands Secondary) and second-year forward Quinn Yates (Edward Milne).

Next up for Chargers men’s basketball is the program’s annual Player Identification Camp which will be held April 15-16 (Fri-Sat) at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence. With an array of educational offerings, an outstanding reputation for teaching excellence and a world-class training facility, it is an exciting time to join the Camosun College Chargers!

For more information, please contact Chargers Head Coach, Scot Cuachon at scotcuachon@gmail.com or complete the Player ID Camp registration form BEFORE Tuesday, April 12.
