Having split last weekend’s matches in Abbotsford against the Douglas College Royals, the Chargers women are now 11-7 and claim the #2 spot in the PACWEST Standings with a #9 CCAA national ranking. They face off against the CAP Blues who are right on their heels at #3 with a record of 9-7. This weekend promises to be a kill-fest as the conference’s top two attackers go head to head. Camosun’s Michelle Zygmunt is averaging 3.70 kills/set while Capilano’s Kira Sutcliffe is close behind at 3.29. Blues libero Mika Chow leads the PACWEST in digs and will also put the Chargers to the test.
In men’s action, Camosun holds on to the PACWEST’s top spot despite dropping to No. 5 nationally following the squad’s pair of losses against Douglas last weekend. At 15-3, the Chargers take on the #6 Blues who are struggling to keep above red line with only four wins to date. The #1 vs #6 match up promises to be an interesting one as the Chargers will have to be on guard against CAP’s Brendan Cairns who leads the league in total offensive stats (5.06/set). Both teams will be trying to get the ball past liberos Matthew Graham (CAP) and Eilon Wong (CAM) who are top 2 and 3 respectively in digs.
Camosun Chargers vs VIU Mariners
The #5 Chargers women suffered two big losses at home last weekend and at 5-8 are hungry for a win. This weekend’s Island Rivalry will pit Camosun against the #2 VIU Mariners who are 11-1 and nationally ranked at No. 10. Setting the pace will be the PACWEST’s top two shooters Sienna Pollard (VIU) who is averaging 18.31 pts/game and Kathryn Candell (CAM) who averages 17.46 pts/game.
Coming off last weekend’s split, the Chargers men stand in fifth place with six wins and seven losses. Camosun will have their hands full with the Mariners who are undefeated and the top team in the country. Fun Fact: The last time Camosun defeated VIU in men’s basketball was November 2, 2007; at the time, VIU was called the Malaspina Mariners (CAM 81-78 MAL).
