Camosun b-ball squads get ready for quarter-final showdowns

Media Release
Release date: February 29, 2016

With the 2015-16 regular season just behind them, the Camosun College Chargers men’s and women’s basketball teams are preparing for an exciting weekend of competition at the PACWEST Provincial Championships hosted by Capilano University in North Vancouver March 3-5. Seeded sixth in both men’s and women’s brackets, Camosun will begin their quest for gold in Thursday’s quarter-finals.

In women’s action, the Chargers face the tournament hosts and #3 seed Capilano Blues. The first-round face-off will be a rematch of last year’s exciting quarter-final which Camosun won by four points to advance to the Bronze medal game. This year, it will be Camosun co-captains Kathryn Candell (Pacific Christian) and Kelly Young (Oak Bay) who will be leading the charge against the Blues. Candell, a second-year guard from Pacific Christian, finishes the season at the top of the leaderboard in points per game and eighth in assists. Teammate and third-year post Kelly Young (Oak Bay) is fifth in points and second in rebounds.

“We feel we are well-prepared for the play-offs and I anticipate another very exciting game,” comments Chargers Women’s Head Coach Carl Macdonald. “Capilano has several players who are solid two-way players led by Michelle Errico and Karyn Neilson. Our co-captains Kathryn Candell and Kelly Young are also very skilled and fans will be shown a fantastic display of teamwork and individual play that rivals the quality players at any level of basketball.”

“We have had a few tough games in February, however our weekend against Kwantlen and Columbia developed a tenacity that served us well for the first three quarters of last weekend’s game against the No. 2 nationally-ranked VIU Mariners which will carry into the play-offs.”

“Should we prevail in the quarters, our semi-final will be against Douglas. Royals Head Coach Courtenay Gerwing has done a great job of putting the team together and they are the deepest and most solid squad in the league. We match up well with Douglas and should offer fans an exciting game to watch.”

On the men’s side, Camosun goes up against the #3 Langara College Falcons. Despite falling to the Falcons in each of their past three meetings this season, the Chargers are heading into the quarters calm and confident.

“We're very well prepared,” states Camosun Men’s Head Coach Scot Cuachon. “We've spent much of the second semester tweaking and adding to what we're doing. I think we're in a good mindset and eager to play. The quarter with Langara should make for a fun game. In the end, it will come down to who plays harder and who executes better. Hopefully we pull it off and move into the next round but for now, it's all about Langara.”
