Chargers golfers rush for gold

Media Release
Release date: September 11, 2015

Having settled for silver at last year’s Provincial and National Championships, the Chargers men’s golf team will make the rush for gold this Fall in both the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conferences.

This year’s squad is set to stage a strong showing with a core of players from 2014 including fourth-year student-athlete Grant Maskiewich (Smithers) who finished fourth at last year’s event, earning his first CCAA National All-Star.

“I'm very excited about the upcoming season,” states Chargers Head Coach John Randle. “I like our team and think we have a chance to have a special season. Although we have lost 2014 National Champion Jarred Callbeck from the line-up, our returning guys are looking good and the addition of our three new recruits will make us a deep squad.”

Joining Maskiewich on the list of returnees is 4th year vet Brady Stead (Vernon) who earned top honors with last year’s President’s Cup along with 2nd year student-athletes Matt Matheson (West Van) and Scott Merriam (Cranbrook). Rounding out Camosun’s seven-man squad are newcomers Mac Keats (Cochrane, AB), Jeff Riches (Claremont, Victoria) and Tyler Robertson (Prince George).

Over the past seven years, Coach Randle has led the program to six consecutive PACWEST medal finishes (1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze) and six trips to Nationals, collecting two silver medals (2014; 2012) and one bronze (2013).

This year’s podium pursuit begins with a pair of road trips to the University BC Okanagan (Sept. 12-13) and Kwantlen University (Sept. 19-20). The Chargers play host to the Camosun Invitational at Bear Mountain, Sept. 26-27 before closing the short six-week season with the PACWEST Provincial Championships, Oct. 3-4 and the CCAA National Championships on Oct. 13-16, both hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford.
