Chargers men’s volleyball squad stays steady at No. 1

Media Release
Release date: November 18, 2015

With a weekend sweep of the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades, the Camosun Chargers men’s volleyball squad preserves its perfect record (8-0) and stays steady, holding the No. 1 spot in the country.

Touted as the PACWEST Men’s Volleyball Match of the Week, the series between Camosun and the Cascades did not disappoint as fans were treated to two exciting days of action highlighted by power-packed hitting and gutsy comebacks. Camosun came through with victory on both days with Friday’s match going to four (25-19, 27-25, 23-25, 25-12) and Saturday’s battle ending in a five-set fight to the finish (19-25, 26-28, 25-23, 27-25, 15-13).

Head Coach Charles Parkinson commented on both matches:

"Overall, we were very impressed with UFV this weekend and very proud of the resilience of our athletes in winning both matches. On Friday, we expected a serious challenge from UFV because Head Coach Kyle Donen has upgraded positions they were weaker in last year with the introduction of a talented rookie class, and because they have veteran leadership from players like 5th year Adam Chaplin and 4th year Joel Kleingeltink. Full of confidence, UFV was the toughest serving team we have faced all season on Friday night and it took us almost the entire first set to adjust to the heat. Their offense has blazing speed but fortunately for us their risks did not always pay off and we were able to withstand the onslaught and win the first two sets. The third set went back and forth and UFV's defense and transition allowed them to steal the win right at the very end. It seemed like they ran out of gas a bit after that, and we were able to secure set 4 and the match."

Charger Jerome Cross registered 25 pts and 11 digs in Saturday’s five-set victory over UFV!

"We thought it might be difficult for UFV to reach the same emotional plateau on Saturday, especially with less than 24 hours rest, but were we ever wrong. They don't have the luxury of starting different players like we do but it made no difference whatsoever and once again we were manhandled by their strong serving and transition game. Chaplin was a force to be reckoned with and was fearless in every rotation. Down 2 sets to 0, we changed our left sides and moved Jerome Cross to the right side, decisions that eventually paid off because we were able to win set 3. Set 4 was scary because we were down by 4 in the late stages and even faced match point against us. To the credit of our Charger athletes they kept their composure, continued to battle and stole the set in overtime. In the fifth, both teams played with power and determination in a really entertaining fight that saw us down by three at the change of sides. We fought back, however, and managed to take a 14-13 lead and on the ensuing play forced a setters dump which was dug back up and close to the net. Our 5th year leader Vitor Macedo showed why he is perhaps the best player in the league by reading the situation under duress and bashing the ball out of bounds, off the hands of the block for the comeback win."

The undefeated Camosun Chargers travel to North Vancouver this weekend to take on the #4 Capilano University Blues. At 4-4, the Blues will be hungry for a win and as Coach Parkinson attests, “They are fearless on defense, tenacious on transition and used to playing right through until the end of sets, and this makes them a dangerous adversary.”

“Our intention is to take Capilano out of their usual system through powerful and strategic serving and to use our size to our advantage either directly through our block or by forcing their hitters to hit limited angles where our defense will be stationed,” commented Coach Parkinson. “We have proven that we can kill the ball on offense and our defensive numbers have improved almost every week and we are hoping that this combination will serve us well.”
