Camosun’s Katie Fetting earns double distinctions en route to Cascades sweep

Media Release
Release date: November 18, 2015

It was a win-win weekend for the Camosun College Chargers who swept the visiting University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades at PISE November 13-14. Heading into the weekend series with UFV, fourth-year outside hitter Katie Fetting (Lethbridge, AB) earned Athlete of the Week honours from both the Pacific Western Athletic Association and the Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association for her outstanding performance against Douglas College the week prior.

The Chargers’ 3-2 victory over the Cascades on November 13th marked the squad’s third consecutive five-set Friday. Despite a tough take-down, the No. 3 nationally-ranked Chargers ultimately upended UFV (23-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 15-9). Saturday’s battle was a slightly more decisive affair as the Chargers controlled all but the second set with UFV pushing the match to four (25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18).

"It was great to see a UFV crew in full force as our previous meeting took place early in preseason and they were hit with injuries that forced athletes to play out of position,” said Head Coach Chris Dahl. “They proved a more than formidable opponent and to be completely honest, probably deserved a better fate on Friday as they served well, passed well and their blocking and defense made it difficult for our side to score consistently. Saturday's four set win included a better performance from the service line and on reception. These are the building blocks of the game and are essential. The second set got away from us early and although we had our opportunities late, we ultimately released the pressure we had built up on our opposition. I like the response in the third and fourth sets. We settled into a bit of a rhythm for the first time in many weeks."

Katie Fetting earns PACWEST and CCAA Athlete of the Week distinctions.

Coach Dahl added, "This was another tough weekend of PACWEST competition. We were able to continue to field a number of different lineups and it was great to see our athletes push through and find success... even if those successes were just a small part of our game at times. UFV made the weekend tough and we'll grow from that experience."

The weekend sweep against UFV advances Camosun to 7-1 and the Chargers maintain the top position in the PACWEST standings.

Following two consecutive weekends at home, the Chargers hit the road this weekend to take on the PACEWEST’s #4 team, the Capilano University Blues who are 5-3.

“On any given day last season Capilano was one of the top teams in the PACWEST,” commented Coach Dahl. “They finished second in league play and many would consider their loss to VIU in the semi-final to be an upset. After reviewing this year’s lineup they factor in much the same as they return the majority of their starting rotation. Capilano is one of the biggest teams in the league through the middle and on the rightside. At the setter position Sarah Hughes leads the offence after converting to the position a few seasons ago. She’s a tremendous athlete in all rotations on the floor and puts her attackers in advantageous positions. This has the makings of a great match-up in the PACWEST.”
