Chargers v-ball squads get set for second half
January 14, 2015
The Camosun Chargers volleyball teams return to PACWEST action this weekend with a rematch against the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades at PISE. Having closed the first half of the season sweeping the Cascades in Abbotsford, Camosun will be looking for repeat wins in this weekend’s contests as they open the second half of the season with the home court advantage.
Following last weekend’s bye, the Chargers women start the mid-season #2 in the PACWEST standings with a record of 10-2; UFV sits just behind in 3rd at 9-5. In the first half, the two teams went head to head with both contests going to five sets. In those matches, Camosun had to pull out all the stops to get past the very tough and athletic Cascades and it is anticipated that this weekend will prove to be just as challenging.
"UFV’s roster boasts a combination of size and athleticism that can make life difficult for opposing teams,” states Chargers Women’s Head Coach Chris Dahl. “They are only one season removed from bringing a CCAA Championship banner to the PACWEST and over the past few seasons we've had some long battles with them.”
Despite pulling off a pair of back-to-back straight set wins over the Cascades in their previous match-up, the Chargers men are preparing for a bitter dispute as UFV boards the bus to even the score.
“While we were able to win six in a row, UFV is still a great team,” says Chargers Men’s Head Coach Charles Parkinson. “I’m sure they will be coming to our gym with a chip on their shoulder and everyone healthy and ready to play, especially former Charger Ryan Thain and their outside hitter Curtis Stromdahl, both of whom have been injured. It may be more difficult for us to win this weekend at home than it was to win on their home court.”
The Chargers men currently share 2nd place in the PACWEST standings with Island rivals, VIU; each squad has 9 wins and 3 losses. UFV is 4th at 6-8.
