Chargers women bounce back to winning ways

January 20, 2015

Following a discouraging 20-point loss to VIU in their January 9th mid-season opener, an invigorated Chargers women's basketball team hit the road last weekend with the intention to get back their mojo and return to their winning ways. The squad was successful in each of their road games taking down the #2 Douglas College Royals 66-56 on Friday and netting another win on Saturday against the #6 Langara Falcons, 71-66. The victories put Camosun into the National Rankings for the first time this season, at #14.

Ali Cooper“Outstanding performances from Ella Goldschmidt, Ali Cooper, Kelly Young as well as the electric play of Amy Acheson propelled us to victory,” comments Chargers Head Coach Carl Macdonald. “I’m very proud of the way they bounced back from the past weekend.”

Fourth-year guard Ella Goldschmid (Mt. Doug) led Friday's cause with 22 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Oak Bay grad Ali Cooper knocked in 21 points coupled with 7 rebounds.

Camosun continued their drive on Saturday, controlling the game from the outset to secure the victory against Langara. Ali Cooper ( who is currently 3rd in the conference in points and 10th in rebounds) continued her onslaught, contributing 29 points, 10 rebounds and 1 assist. Second-year wing Amy Acheson (Lambrick) and first-year guard Haley Cabral (Claremont) each posted 11 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

“Kelly Young secured three crucial rebounds in the final moments to secure the victory,” adds Coach Macdonald. “Saturday also saw the return of Melissa Van Dyk who has been out of competitive play for over a year with a concussion. Melissa contributed one assist and four rebounds in limited minutes.”

While the Chargers women improve their record to 6-4 and advance in the standings to tie for 3rd place, the Camosun men slip to 3-7, following Friday’s 83-53 fallout to Douglas and Saturday’s loss to Langara which ended 75-62.

“The games against Douglas and Langara were disappointing to say the least,” comments Chargers Men’s Head Coach Scot Cuachon. “In both games, we did just enough to be right with our opponents through half-time, but we consistently came out flat in the third quarter. Against Douglas, we did not defend well and against Langara we did not bring the intangibles. We lost numerous loose ball battles, gave up too many offensive rebounds and gave Langara too many opportunities with the ball. It's impossible to win against a team of that calibre if you keep giving them opportunities.”

Third-year guard Evan Woodson led Camosun in both games, contributing 16 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists on Friday and 17 points and 4 rebounds on Saturday.  Woodson is 6th in the league for average points per game.

This weekend, the Chargers basketball teams have the home court advantage as they host the Quest University Kermodes and Capilano University Blues at PISE.

Quest’s women’s squad remains undefeated over 10 league games and are ranked 4th nationally. The Quest men are 9-1 and ranked 5th in the nation. Both are #1 in the PACWEST although the men currently share the top spot with the VIU Mariners. Capilano is tied for fifth with Camosun in the men’s standings; the CAP women’s team is  5-5 and in fifth.

“Quest remains the only undefeated team in the league,” says Coach Macdonald. “We match up very well with them and anticipate another great game. Ella Goldschmidt will lead a determined team looking to reverse the outcome of our last meeting. Capilano is a team that likes to run a quick game and we will need a strong defensive effort to maintain our stand in the league.”

“Quest is a very good team, Cap is very dangerous,” states Coach Cuachon. “We'll see how bad we want success this weekend. “
